Bahan Bakar

Ditinjau dari sudut teknis dan ekonomis, bahan bakar diartikan sebagai bahan yang apabila dibakar dapat meneruskan proses pembakaran tersebut dengan sendirinya, disertai dengan pengeluaran kalor. Pada bahan bakar nuklir, kalor diperoleh dari hasil reaksi rantai penguraian atom-atom melalui peristiwa radioaktif.

Pembakaran

Pembakaran adalah reaksi kimia yang cepat antara oksigen dan bahan yang dapat terbakar, disertai timbulnya cahaya dan menghasilkan kalor.

Pembakaran spontan adalah pembakaran dimana bahan mengalami oksidasi perlahan-lahan sehingga kalor yang dihasilkan tidak dilepaskan, akan tetapi dipakai untuk menaikkan suhu bahan secara pelan-pelan sampai mencapai suhu nyala.

Pembakaran sempurna adalah pembakaran dimana semua konstituen yang dapat terbakar di dalam bahan bakar membentuk gas CO₂, air (= H₂O), dan gas SO₂, sehingga tak ada lagi bahan yang dapat terbakar tersisa.

JENIS-JENIS FUEL OIL

Fuel oil adalah salah satu group dari oil yang didapatkan dari refining crude oil pada suatu titik didih tertentu. Ketika crude oil dipanaskan, komponen-komponen yang mempunyai titik didih rendah menguap terlebih dahulu, diikuti berurutan oleh komponen-komponen yang berikutnya sesuai titik didihnya.
Gambar dibawah menunjukan suatu proses refining crude oil secara garis besar. Dibagian dalam tower fractionating berisi rak-rak dengan tingkatan-tingkatan berbeda.
Crude oil dituangkan dari atas tower fractionating, dan dipanaskan dari bawah. Bila proses ini berlangsung, temperatur pada bagian atas dari tower fractionating lebih rendah daripada temperatur dibagian dasar, sehingga pada rak bagian atas dari tower fractionating, komponen-komponen yang mempunyai titik didih rendah (komponen-komponen yang mudah menguap) menguap lebih dulu, dan komponen-komponen sisanya mengalir turun ke-rak dibagian bawah berikutnya. Komponen-komponen crude oil yang mengalir turun ke-rack berikutnya menguap pada temperatur penguapan baru, dan komponen-komponen sisanya terus mengalir turun ke-rack berikutnya. Dengan cara demikian, selagi crude oil mengalir dari atas tower fractionating kedasar, komponen-komponen dengan titik didih rendah berurutan menguap.
Oil yang diuapkan dikelompokan pada setiap tingkatan, dan kemudian didinginkan untuk mendapatkan jenis-jenis fuel oil.

KEROSENE
Kerosine adalah bahan bakar dengan rentang titik didih dari 170 sampai 2500C, dan digunakan untuk bahan bakar pesawat udara. Jika kerosene digunakan sebagai bahan bakar engine diesel, akan terjadi problem-problem sebagai berikut.
1. Fuel bekerja melumasi bagian-bagian dari system fuel yang bergesekan, seperti plunger dalam pompa injeksi atau injector nozzle. Akan tetapi, kerosene mempunyai viscosity rendah, sehinggai tidak dapat melumasi bagian-bagian bergersekan secara sempurna. Ini berarti bahwa film oil hilang dan terjadi keausan yang abnormal atau kerusakan.
2. Dibandingkan dengan diesel fuel(light/heavy), output power dengan menggunakan kerosene turun 5 ~ 10%.
Injeksi fuel pada engine diesel, yang dikontrol adalah volume fuel. Kerosene mempunyai suatu pembangkit panas yang besar per satuan beratnya, tetapi berat persatuan volume (specific gravity/berat jenis) adalah rendah, sehingga sebagai akibatnya, jumlah energy panas persatuan volume menjadi turun.

FUEL (Light Diesel Oil)
Fuel ini adalah bahan bakar dengan rentang titik didih dari 240 sampai 3500C, dan di-distilasi setelah kerosene. Dari semua jenis-jenis bahan bakar, minyak ini mempunyai sifat-sifat yang paling cocok untuk ignition, combustion, dan viscosity yang diperlukan oleh engine diesel high-speed yang kecil, sehingga hampir semua engine diesel high-speed, termasuk engine-engine untuk mesin-mesin konstruksi, menggunakan fuel (light diesel oil).

FUEL (Heavy Diesel Oil)
Fuel ini mengandung light diesel oil yang masih bericampur minyak residu (residual oil), dan rentang titik didihnya sama dengan light diesel oil. Minyak diesel berat ini digunakan sebagai bahan bakar boiler (mesin uap), heating furnace (tungku pemanas), atau engine diesel medium-speed ukuran besar atau medium.
Tetapi dibandingkan dengan fuel/ light Diesel oil, heavy oil mempunyai problem-problem berikut, sehingga minyak ini hampir tidak pernah digunakan sebagai bahan bakar engine untuk diesel putaran tinggi (hig-speed):
1. Banyak mengandung pengotoran-pengotoran, sehingga system bahan bakar pada engine mudah menjadi buntu.
2. Mempunyai viscosity tinggi, sehingga partikel-partikel dari kabut minyak yang diinjeksikan ukurannya besar-besar, sehingga mengakibatkan pembakaran kurang sempurna (incomplete combustion) cenderung menghasilkan partikel-partikel carbon. Dengan demikian, bagian-bagian yang bergesekan mengalami keausan lebih cepat, dan exhaust gas berwarna hitam (black smoke).
3. Kandungan sulfur tinggi, sehingga lebih menambah keausan korosif.

Definisi

Engine adalah : Suatu alat yang menghasilkan tenaga melalui suatu proses tertentu, dimana proses thermis diubah menjadi tenaga mekanis.

Machine/Unit adalah : Suatu unit secara keseluruhan, yang mencakup engine sampai final drive.

Prinsip Kerja Engine

Udara yang dimasukkan kedalam silinder liner, kemudian dikompresikan hingga suhunya naik mencapai 300 – 400 oC, kemudian disemprotkan bahan bakar (solar) sehingga terjadi pembakaran, yang menghasilkan tekanan sebesar 60 – 80 kg/cm2 dengan suhu sekitar 600 – 800 oC.
